What some common myths about counselling
  • Counselling is for people who have mental health problems:
People who seek counseling are ordinary people looking to live a more healthy and positive lifestyle. Counseling can help people cope with specific problems such as relationship breakdown, bereavement, job stress, family difficulty.
  • Attending counselling is a sign of weakness; strong people don’t need counselling:
The truth is that asking for help is a sign of strength. Exploring one’s feeling and emotions with a view of leading a more positive way of life for themselves as well as for their families is a sign of courage.
  • Counselling is about the counsellor giving advice and telling them what they should do in the situation:
Counseling helps people explore their situation and possible solutions so that they can live a more fulfilled life. It is the counsellor’s responsibility to NOT give advice, rather to guide the client through a series of self- exploratory exercises to determine what solution is the right one for them.
